Easy And Quick Tiropita (Greek Cheesepie) Recipe!

A recipe for a quick and easy Greek tiropita, the famous Greek cheese pie! All you need is a few ingredients, a large bowl, a baking tray, and just over an hour.  Try it!

How to make an easy Greek tiropita without the fuss!

If you are reading this, I’m sure you’ve heard of tiropita, the famous Greek cheese pie. It’s made either with layers of phyllo pastry, or pie crust, and a filling of eggs and various types of cheese. It’s delicious, but not exactly quick – and it’s maybe a little fussy to make.

So, here is a version that is all about simplicity: no pastry, no rolling, not much washing up to do. You’ll need just a handful of ingredients, one large bowl, and a baking tray.

The result? A golden, cheesy pie that’s soft, yummy, and ready in just over an hour – prep and baking included!!!

Ingredients for the easiest Greek tiropita you’ll ever make

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 200 g (7 oz) Greek yoghurt – I use FAGE Total Greek yoghurt 2%, but you can also use any other version that you can get hold of, as long as it’s unflavoured
  • 150 g (5.3 oz) feta cheese – try and find an imported Greek brand, such as Dodoni
  • 200 g (7 oz) cottage cheese
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) strong grated yellow cheese – I use Greek kefalotiri or mizithra, see below for substitutes 
  • 5 eggs
  • about 100 g (3.5 oz) self-raising flour 
  • black pepper
  • sesame seeds and black sesame seeds, for decorating (optional)

How to make a quick Greek tiropita

The procedure is really quick and easy – it usually takes me about 10-12 minutes to put the ingredients together for my easy Greek tiropita!

Prep the tray – Line a medium baking tray with baking paper and preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). If you don’t have baking paper you can use olive oil to line the tray, but this version won’t be as light.

Cut the feta in small pieces – In a large bowl, crumble in the feta in small pieces

Mix in the grated cheese – Throw in the grated cheese and mix together

Add the Greek yoghurt and cottage cheese – Pour in the bowl the cottage cheese and Greek yoghurt, and stir

Pour in the eggs – Add the eggs and black pepper, and stir for a while

At this stage, the mix will be quite runny

Conbine the flour – Fold through the self-raising flour until combined. You still want the consistency to be a little runny – you can add more flour if you wish, but I’ve found that this makes it more stodgy.

Pour in the tray – Pour the mixture into the prepared tray, smooth the surface, and sprinkle with sesame seeds

How to make an easy Greek tiropita

Bake – Bake for around 30-35 minutes, then bring the pie out of the oven and cut in pieces – this is very important, otherwise it won’t cook through!

Bake for another 15-20 minutes, until golden and firm to the touch. If you have time, you can leave it in the oven for another 10-15 minutes so it sets better.

Enjoy – Allow the pie to cool slightly before serving, and enjoy!!

Tips & variations for quick Greek tiropita

Here are a few variations!

Cheese swaps: You can try different grated cheeses depending on your taste. If you can find Greek kefalotyri or mizithra go for it, or try parmesan cheese instead; you can also use cheddar for sharpness, gouda for creaminess, or any other similar cheese that melts. I find that cottage cheese makes it fluffy, but you can use ricotta cheese as well.

Herbs & extras: A little fresh dill, parsley, or even a pinch of nutmeg can add depth. I prefer sticking to black pepper only, but you can experiment with any herbs or spices you like.

Make-ahead: This quick tiropita keeps very well in the fridge and is very easy to reheat. I find it tastes better when warm, but you can also enjoy it at room temperature!

Serving ideas: My easy Greek tiropita is perfect as a snack or light lunch. You can serve it with a crisp green salad, or even a Greek salad, for extra Greekness!
