Greece Braces Itself For Prolonged Heatwave

Greece is expecting a long and very intense heatwave, from July 21 to at least July 26, 2025. This hot spell will be especially strong in many parts of the country, and could affect daily life, travel, and even health.

How hot will it get and which areas of Greece will be affected?

Starting on Monday, July 21, Greece will be facing an intense heatwave, which is expected to last for at least six days. While Greece is used to hot summers, temperatures will be much higher than normal all over the country.

According to the weather prediction, temperatures could reach 44C (111F) in some Greek cities, such as Athens, Kalamata or Nafplio. In Athens, nights will also stay warm, with temperatures staying above 28C (84F), making it hard to cool down.

Inland regions like Attica, the Peloponnese, Thessaly and Central Macedonia will be seeing the highest temperatures, while the islands will be cooler overall. Still, temperatures are expected to rise well above 35C (95F) on some islands, such as Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Corfu.

What should people do?

Authorities are urging everyone to be careful. People should avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day, drink plenty of water, and watch for symptoms like dizziness or nausea that could mean heat exhaustion.

This guide includes more tips on how to stay cool during a heatwave.

Also, please note that, when temperatures are extreme, certain services in Greece are called off from 11:00 / 12:00 to 17:00.

As an example, the Acropolis normally remains closed when temperatures exceed 38-39C (100-102F). If you are scheduled to visit in the next few days, it’s best to get in touch and see if the site will be open.

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) will keep updating forecasts every day, so that people know what to expect. You can check regional weather predictions at Meteo.gr
