Athens Traffic Restrictions 7 December Due To Erdogan’s Visit

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will be visiting Athens on Thursday 7 December. Many roads in the city will remain closed to traffic, and security measures will be in place.

Thursday 7 December – Athens traffic arrangements 

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is visiting Athens this coming Thursday 7 December.

There will be traffic arrangements on all major road arteries of the Greek capital, especially those leading from the Athens International Airport to central Athens.

Traffic flow in the centre of Athens will be affected, and several roads will be closed to the public.

People who need to go downtown are advised to use public transportation, such as the Athens metro

Drones, helicopters and thousands of police 

Due to Mr Erdogan’s visit, there will be increased security measures in Athens. The police force will be patrolling the streets, with 3,500 policemen and policewomen everywhere around the city.

Helicopters and drones will be used to provide images of Athens from above. There will also be snipers at various tall buildings in Athens, located on the route that Mr Erdogan’s motorcade will follow.

Buildings such as the Turkish Embassy, which is between Evangelismos and Syntagma metro, will be cordoned off, and anti-terrorism measures will be in place.      

In addition, security measures will be particularly increased at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport.

The Turkish President is visiting Athens to participate in the Greece-Turkey Supreme Cooperation Council (SCC).
