General Strike In Greece – Wednesday 17 April 2024

On Wednesday, 17 April 2024, there will be a big general strike in Greece. Among others, the strike will affect ferry routes throughout Greece, and transportation in the Athens area. 

Strikes in Greece on 17 April 2024

On Wednesday 17 April, be prepared for disruptions due to a general strike in Greece. The strike will affect transportation in Athens, and not only.

Here are the services that will be affected in Athens:

  • Athens red, blue + green metro lines: 24-hour strike
  • Athens airport metro: 24-hour strike
  • Tram in Athens: 24-hour strike
  • Suburban railway in Athens and beyond: 24-hour strike
  • Athens taxis: Athens taxis will be on strike from 05:00 – 15:00. You can also check out this private transfer service.
  • Athens buses and trolleys: Buses and trolleys will be running from about 9:30 – 20:30. This includes the airport buses.
  • Athens trolleys: No announcements yet.

The strike is organized by the General Confederation of Greek Workers, known in Greek by its acronym, GSEE.

Ferries and trains in Greece will also be participating in the 24-hour strike. If you are travelling on a ferry on the 17th April, please check with your ferry company for changes or cancellations.

Other professionals participating in the strike include school teachers, doctors in the public sector and accountants. 

Demands of the Confederation

Here are some of the Confederation’s demands:

  • Immediate recruitment of permanent employees
  • Reestablishment of the open negotiations for Collective Labor Agreements
  • Salary increases, in order to address inflation and increased living costs
  • Operation of the railway system throughout Greece
  • Complete restoration of the infrastructure and facilities affected by natural disasters
  • Upgrades to all existing infrastructure
  • Improved working conditions.

Demonstrations on 17 April 

In addition to the 24-hour strike, the Unions are organizing a demonstration in front of the Parliament, right on Syntagma Square, at 11:00.

Advance warning for strike on the 21st May

The Confederation of Greek Civil Servants’ Trade Unions, known in Greek as ADEDY, has announced another strike on Tuesday 21 May. More details will be available closer to the time.
