Full Moon Night 19 August 2024 – Free Events In Greece

Over a hundred archaeological sites, historical monuments and museums in Greece will open their doors to the public for the August Full Moon, on 19 August 2024.

Free Admission On 19 August 2024 – August Full Moon in Greece

This year, Greece’s Ministry of Culture of Greece is, once again, organizing the August Full Moon Evening. On Monday, August 19, 2024, select archaeological sites, historical landmarks and museums in Greece will offer free admission. The public is invited to enjoy these cultural events at no cost.

Over a hundred archaeological sites, monuments, museums and other landmarks across the country will welcome visitors on that evening. More than fifty of these sites and museums will host special events, while the rest will offer free admission to the public past their normal opening hours.

The events are taking place under the coordination of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage of Greece. Numerous artists will be performing under the moonlight, to create a memorable evening.

Sites that will remain open after-hours include, among others, Ancient Delphi and Ancient Olympia. Various archaeological museums across the country will also participate. 

Here are the events that will take place across Greece. 

August Full Moon Events – Athens and Region of Attica  

Attica Region is where Athens belongs. There are a number of August full moon night events in Athens and the rest of Attica.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing planned in the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora or the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion

Monday, 19 August, Full Moon Night

  • Museum of Modern Greek Culture, Areos 10, Athens – Open with free admission (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Numismatic Museum, El. Venizelou 12, Athens – Free admission (15:30 – 23:00).
  • Byzantine Church of Saint George (Omorfoklissia), Galatsi – Music Event, starts 21:00. The Church will remain open from 18:00 to 22:00.
  • Piraeus Archaeological Museum – Music Event, open with free admission (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Kalamos, Oropos, Archaeological Site of Amphiareion – Theatrical Monologue, excerpts from Euripides’ “Hecuba”, starts at 20:30.
  • Poros island, Archaeological Site of the Sanctuary of Poseidon – Piano Recital (20:00 – 23:00).
  • Archaeological Site of Kythira Castle: Free admission (20:00 – 24:00).

  • Patras Archaeological Museum – Thematic tours of the permanent collections, free admission (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Kyllini, Chlemoutsi Castle – Music performance, starts at 21:30. The site will remain open (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Olympia, Archaeological Museum – Screening of the film “Electra” by Michael Cacoyannis.
  • Olympia, Archaeological Site – Free admission (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Bassae, Temple of Apollo Epikourios – Music event titled “Soundscapes”.
  • Kalamata Castle – Free admission (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Kyparissia Castle – Free admission (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Palace of Nestor – Free admission (20:00 – 24:00).
  • Archaeological Site of Mystras – Free admission (20:00 – 24:00).

Highlights in the Region of Thessaly include the amazing Meteora Monasteries, the impressive Theopetra Cave nearby, Volos town and Mt Pelion.

  • Archaeological Site of Nea Anchialos – Music event, starts at 21:00. Free admission to the site (19:30 – 24:00).
  • Documentation and Education Center of Theopetra Cave – Free admission (19:00 to 24:00), music event in the courtyard.
  • Historical Site of Ano Kerasia – Concert. 

Monday, 19 August, Full Moon Night

  • Ancient Temple of Apollo, Ancient Metropolis – Poetry and music event, 20:00 – 23:30.
  • Athanassakeion Archaeological Museum of Volos – Classical music concert, starts at 21:00. The museum will remain closed.
  • Byzantine Castle of Trikala – Music event, starts at 21:00. Free admission to the site (8:30 – 15:30 and 19:00 – 24:00.
  • Castle of Velika – Concert featuring Billy Carke. 

Tuesday, 20 August

  • Diachronic Museum of Larissa – Music event in the museum’s garden. The museum’s hours will be extended (20:00 – 24:00).

The Dodecanese islands include Rhodes, Kos, Karpathos, Patmos, Kalymnos, Nisyros, Tilos, Kasos, Symi and many more.

Crete is Greece’s largest island. It would take you months to see it all! The main cities, Heraklion and Chania, have airports and ferry ports.

The islands of the Northern Aegean are among the largest and most diverse ones in Greece. Examples include Lemnos, Samos, Lesvos and Chios.
